Principal activities:
- development of inventory and surveying of local genetic diversity of maize
and beans;
- surveying farmers' management of local varieties of these crops;
- supporting farmers management of the local varieties (seed supply);
- evaluation of the local varieties in national and local trials (PVS);
- investigation of opportunities for supporting farmers breeding;
- improvement of the policy framework for utilisation of local varieties.
In the state Paraná, modern agriculture is predominant
amongst small-scale farmers, who have become more dependent on the purchase of seeds and varieties.
The project aims at reversing the dependency of these farmers with respect to
the seeds and varieties of maize and beans. It aims to support farmers'
management of genetic sources and utilisation of local varieties. A principal
focus regards drawing attention to the local seed supply and opportunities for
supporting farmers’ breeding.
