Policy Issues

Policy issues of the CBDC involve:
  • creating awareness about the loss of biodiversity in agriculture;
  • highlighting trends in biotechnology;
  • drawing attention to intellectual property rights regimes;
  • issues on bio-piracy and global changes in the "life industries";
  • production of publications and organisatin of workshops on these subjects with CBDC partners,
The ETC Group is an international civil society organization based in Winnipeg, Canada, and governed by a Board of Trustees with members from six continents. The organization is dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, and to the socially responsible development of technologies useful to rural societies. The ETC Group is concerned about the loss of agricultural biodiversity, the protection of indigenous knowledge, the impact of intellectual property and biotechnology on food security, and the governance of international institutions that affect rural communities. With colleagues from around the world, the ETC Group conducts research and policy advocacy, usually in an effort to influence policy negotiations in multilateral forums. The ETC Group has roster status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and consulting status with the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

ETC Group's contribution to the CBDC has included research on:
  • the loss of biodiversity in agriculture
  • trends in biotechnology
  • intellectual property and bio-piracy
  • global changes in the "life industries"
