Technical Issues

CGN conduct strategic technical activities to support CBDC partners around the world in the efforts of conducting research on and preserving plant genetic resources. These activities are focussed on:
  • supporting production of scientific and non-scientific reports;
  • collection and distribution of relevant literature;
  • producing modules for education on farmers management of PGR;
  • providing technical expertise in PGR management;
  • facilitating the website and electronic communications within the CBDC programme;
  • providing facilities for genetic analysis of local germplasm;
  • facilitating formal academic training at MSc and PhD levels.
CGN is part of the Agricultural Research Department and executes the major genetic resources programme for agricultural crops of the Netherlands under a mandate of the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries. It maintains the genebank of the Netherlands. The genebank represents the Dutch contribution to the ex situ conservation of genetic diversity relevant to crops.

CGN aims to contribute to the development of efficient strategies and methodologies for the sustainable maintenance and utilisation of genetic resources by working with different actors in the field of genetic diversity. In-situ and ex-situ conservation are considered as complementary approaches supporting sustainable agricultural development.
