Centro de Educación y Tecnología para el Desarrollo del Sur (CET-SUR, NGO)

Principal activities:

  • reactivation of the use of areas around the house as sites for the maintenance and development of biodiversity;
  • protection of the forests as genetic resources conservation areas within the communities;
  • increasing the autonomy of rural communities to maintain, reproduce and develop local PGR;
  • documentation of indigenous knowledge on biodiversity;
  • implementation of trials on the comparison of local and modern varieties of various crops (PVS).
The project works with Mapuche communities in the area around the city of Temuco. The Mapuche people have a long tradition of management of both agro- and natural biodiversity. The aim is to support and reactivate this management. The project uses a systems approach in the documentation of biodiversity and the related indigenous knowledge. It also uses a systems approach in the development of ways to support the farmers’ management of biodiversity.
