Sierra Leone

Community Biodiversity Action Network, Freetown (CBAN, NGO)

Principal activities:

  • survey of management practices of on-farm genetic diversity;
  • collection, characterisation and evaluation of landraces;
  • analysis of the local seed system;
  • analysis of farmers' management of varieties during civil unrest;
  • supporting NGOs in dealing with genetic diversity in relief operations;
  • conducting research on the genetic background of local varieties.
The political situation in Sierra Leone has a serious impact on the implementation of the CBDC-project. The project studies the farmers' management and genetic background of local varieties. The project supports relief NGOs in dealing with genetic diversity. The project further studies the relationship between African rice and Asian rice, and relates this to the management and survival strategies of farmers.

The recent research attempts to investigate the effect of the civil war on agro-biodiversity. Please follow the link to see some highlights of the first phase of germplasm collecting.
