Principal activities:
- survey of PGR, seed systems and crop management and documentation
(database) on rice, vegetables, root and tuber crops;
- collection, characterisation and evaluation of farmers' varieties;
- dissemination to farmers and on-farm testing of genetic materials
(farmers' varieties, modern varieties, research materials) of rice, and root
and tuber crops;
- training of farmers in PGR conservation, development (selection) and seed
production (field days, farmer field schools; farmer clubs).
The project integrates aspects related to the management of
genetic diversity, local knowledge and local seed supply in farming systems
research. The specific element of the project in Vietnam is that a government
research and education agency is directly involved in enhancing local (farmer's
and community’s) capacities in conservation, variety selection and seed
supply. The institute relies on local organisations (farmers clubs, etc.).
