Community Technology Development Trust (CTDT, NGO)

Principal activities:

  • survey of farmers' management of local genetic diversity of small grain cereals and pulses;
  • collection, characterisation and evaluation of farmers' varieties;
  • analysis of local seed systems;
  • establishment of community seed banks;
  • organisation of diversity fairs;
  • raising farmers' awareness about genetic diversity;
  • policy research
The project has a strong focus on the farmers' seed supply system and addresses the access to and use of sorghum, millets and cowpea landraces. The project investigates farmers’ seed management and tries to strengthen this through the establishment of community seed banks. The project supports the organisation of diversity fairs as tool to create awareness on genetic diversity issues amongst farmers and extension workers. This project forges a strong relation between the policy context at the national and international level and the farmers' management of genetic diversity.
